INTRODUCTION


TASK:

     You are a writer/illustrator who has decided to enter a contest sponsored by "Scientific American".  You must write an article presenting information about a force that builds (a constructive force) and/or destroys (a destructive force) the earth.  You must also provide and present to the contest committee visual materials that you have created in collaboration with other writers/illlustrators.  The winning articles and illustrations will be published in the next issue of "Scientific American".



Your force of the earth will be:

    •VOLCANOES
    •EARTHQUAKES
    •GLACIERS
    •FLOODING/EROSION

        •MATHBLAST

These are the steps you will follow in researching your topic:

1. Read the task.

2. Do background reading on forces of the earth. Do not take notes.

3. Your librarian will give you a pre search plan and will teach you how to use it.

4. From your background reading, identify some key words and write them on your pre search plan.

5. Think about and list on your pre search plan the best sources to find information about forces of the earth.

6. You must use a minimum of three resources to gather information about forces of the earth.  You must
    use two different types of resources.  Your librarian will help you choose resources.

7. Your librarian will give you a bibliography worksheet form and will teach you how to use it as you are doing
   your research.

8.  Take notes on the note cards provided.
        • Use only one reference on any single card.
        • You may have more than one card on the same sub topic.
        • Use your own words when taking notes.  If you don't know the meaning of a word, look it up.

9. Give the completed note cards to your teacher for approval by the given due date.

10. Organize your note cards in the order in which you will write your research report.
    Make a plan which can be a web or a list.  Give your plan to your teacher for approval.

11. Hand in completed bibliography worksheet to the librarian by the given due date.

12. Write your article for the contest sponsored by Scientific American being sure to answer all the
    questions for your force.  Save it on your computer disk.  Print a copy of the report.

13. Conduct a peer conference as directed by your teacher and make any necessary
    changes to your written report.

14. Hand in final copy and bibliography to your teacher.

15. Work with you group to create your poster.

16. Present your poster to the class.

17. Take notes on the presentation chart during the student presentations.

18. Your teacher will lead a discussion on the forces that build and destroy the earth.

19. You will earn a grade based on the attached rating scale.
