Most Americans think that we’re Mexican or we come from Spain since we speak Spanish. They don’t really know anything about El Salvador. Some people still associate El Salvador with the civil war, which ended in 1992 when we were still babies. They think that El Salvador is still a dangerous war-torn place, but they don't see that a lot of progress has been made in recent years.
We don’t understand why people from school don’t want to be friends or hang out with each other after school. When we first came to the U.S., we were surprised by how unapproachable most people seem. In El Salvador, we always had fun just relaxing with our friends. To us it seems like American kids are kind of aloof.
